- Prep and primingSkim, sand and a wallcovering primer. Paper hung straight onto raw or glossy walls is the reason most jobs fail at the seams.
- Plumb layoutReference line set to a plumb wall, not to a corner, with the starting point chosen so the least attractive seam lands out of sight.
- Pattern matchingRepeat calculated across the wall before the first drop goes up, including around windows and doors.
- Corners and outletsDouble-cut seams, relief cuts at corners, and covers cut so the pattern continues across them.
- Clean finishSeams rolled, adhesive wiped before it dries, trim and floor left clean.

Skim, sand, dust-vacuum and prime with the bonding primer the material calls for.

Lay out
Set a plumb reference, calculate the repeat, plan seams around light sources and openings.

Hang and detail
Hang with the correct adhesive system, roll seams, double-cut where needed, detail corners and outlets, clean down.

Plaster walls need different prep
Pre-war plaster is rarely flat and often has decades of paint on it. Skimming and priming is usually the difference between a good result and a visible seam every 20 inches.

Bathrooms and humidity
Grasscloth and paper-backed materials do not belong in a bathroom with a shower and no exhaust fan. Vinyl and non-woven will hold up.

Wallcovering behind a cast-iron radiator needs to be planned, not improvised. We measure the clearance at the estimate.

How much does wallpaper installation cost in NYC?
Labor for standard non-woven or vinyl is $44–$60 per single roll with ONIITO, against $55–$75 typical in New York. An accent wall up to 60 sq ft starts at $280. Grasscloth and murals are $7.20–$11.20 per square foot. Our minimum job is $280.
Do I need to prep the wall first?
No — we do it. Skim, sand and prime is $2.40–$3.20 per square foot and is quoted as its own line so you can see it.
Can you remove old wallpaper?
Yes, $2.00–$3.20 per square foot depending on how well the old paper is stuck down. We will not quote removal blind — a small test patch tells us a lot.
Will the seams be visible?
On a properly prepped wall with a matched repeat, seams should be hard to find in normal light. On a wall with strong raking daylight we plan the seam positions around it and tell you what to expect.
Is grasscloth suitable for a bathroom?
Only a powder room with no shower. In a full bathroom, use vinyl or a non-woven material instead.
